Turkey Tail mushroom, scientifically known as Trametes versicolor, is a type of medicinal mushroom that has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. It is often praised for its numerous health benefits, thanks to its rich composition of bioactive compounds. Benefits that have been studied associated with Turkey Tail mushroom include:

  1. Immune Support: Turkey Tail mushroom contains polysaccharide compounds like beta-glucans, which have been shown to enhance immune function. These compounds can stimulate the activity of certain immune cells, such as macrophages and natural killer cells, helping the body to defend against infections and diseases.
  2. Antioxidant Properties: The mushroom contains antioxidants such as phenols and flavonoids, which help to neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. By reducing oxidative stress, Turkey Tail mushroom may help to prevent cellular damage and lower the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.
  3. Anti-inflammatory Effects: Compounds found in Turkey Tail mushroom have been found to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is associated with various health problems, including arthritis, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.
  4. Digestive Health: Some research suggests that Turkey Tail mushroom may support digestive health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This can help to maintain a healthy balance of gut flora and improve digestion and nutrient absorption.
  5. Cancer Support: Studies have shown that Turkey Tail mushroom has potential anti-cancer properties. Compounds in the mushroom, such as polysaccharopeptides (PSP) and polysaccharide-K (PSK), have been investigated for their ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and enhance the body's natural defenses against cancer.
  6. Antiviral Properties: Turkey Tail mushroom has been studied for its potential antiviral effects, particularly against certain strains of influenza and the herpes simplex virus. Compounds found in the mushroom may help to inhibit the replication of viruses and reduce the severity and duration of viral infections.
  7. Liver Support: Research suggests that Turkey Tail mushroom may have hepatoprotective effects, meaning it could help to protect the liver from damage caused by toxins and oxidative stress. This could potentially benefit individuals with liver disease or those at risk of liver damage.
  8. Support for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Preliminary studies have indicated that Turkey Tail mushroom may help to alleviate symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) by modulating immune function and reducing inflammation.

Tinctures are shelf stable & have a general shelf life of 5 years. Alcohol extracts the widest range of constituents, but properly tincturing mushrooms requires a multi-step process. Mushrooms also need to be heated to be at full potency & combined carefully to preserve polysaccharide integrity. My tinctures always utilize organic mushrooms and are extracted in an alcohol based blend for 6 weeks (along with a palm based organic glycerine & raw local honey. They are then slowly simmered in water to release their polysaccharide goodness, then carefully combined to preserve all the medicinal properties. I studied this method under the guidance of seasoned herbalists.
